Pattern Design + Construction:

I love designing cute animal patterns! This simple sloth crochet pattern works up quickly and makes the most adorable cup cozy. I would classify this pattern as beginner friendly since it uses a handful of basic stitches. It can also be adjusted to fit your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

This Crochet Sloth Cozy consists of the coffee sleeve base, which is crocheted in rows to create a flat rectangle. The face, eyes, and rosy cheeks are crocheted separately and attached to the base with a tapestry needle. The completed coffee cozy is then seamed up with a tapestry needle. The finished piece measures approximately 4" tall and 4.5" wide when lying flat.

Yarn:

I chose medium (4) worsted weight yarn for my Crochet Sloth Cozy design. I enjoy working with worsted weight yarn for coffee sleeves since it is versatile and wears well. You could easily substitute for another worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

For this tutorial, I'm using the following yarn colors:

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Light Peach

  • Yarn Bee Yarn ID, Medium 4, 5 oz / 252 yd in the color Oats

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g. in the color Coffee

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g. in the color Café Latte

Crochet Sloth Cozy - Free Pattern

This quick crochet project is the most adorable mug companion.

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.

Coffee Cozy Base:

With light brown yarn, chain 35

Rows 1-15: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail.

Row 10: SC in the first 6 stiches, chain 1 (6 stitches)

Row 11: DEC, SC in the next 2 stitches, DEC, chain 1 (4 stitches)

Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.

Attach to the other side and repeat Rows 10-12 without tying off.

Face Border:

We're going to create a border around the face to clean up the edges.

  • So here we are after the chain 1, continue left down the inside curve of the top with 2 SC, slip stitch into the center stitch we skipped in between the 'humps' and continue to SC around until you've reached the beginning stitch of the border.

  • Slip stitch into the first stitch of the border.

  • Chain 1, tie off pulling through the chain stitch to secure.

  • Weave in loose ends and trim any excess yarn except for the long tail.

Eye Patches (make 2):

With dark brown yarn, chain 3

Row 1: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)

Row 2: INC, SC in the next, chain 1 (3 stitches)

Row 3: INC, SC in the next, chain 1 (4 stitches)

Rows 4-6: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (4 stitches)

Eye Patch Border:

Continue down the left side, around the curve and back to the top right with a round of SC (not back across the top of row 6 though). Chain 1 and tie off with a long tail.

Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 5, pull tight (5 stitches)

Slip stitch into the first stitch of the round, chain 1, tie off with a medium tail

Assembly:

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, attach the eye patches to either side of the face base.

  • Using the dark brown yarn, stitch a little nose stitch in between the eye patches.

  • Using the long tails, attach the rosy cheeks at the bottom corners of the eye patches.

  • Attach the safety eyes.

  • Using the long tail, attach the face base to the coffee cozy base.

Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (face on the inside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.

  • Trim any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.
