Pattern Design + Construction:
Pumpkin Spice Season is my favorite season of all! I found the seasonal pumpkin spice coffee creamer in my local grocery store and couldn't resist creating this simple, yet adorable crochet pumpkin spice cozy! I liked the idea of a simple pumpkin silhouette against a soft cream coffee sleeve.
This crochet coffee cozy is worked into flat rows using single crochet stitches to create a rectangle. The pumpkin applique is crocheted separately and stitched onto the coffee cozy base using a tapestry needle. The completed mug cozy is then folded and seamed up using a tapestry needle. The finished mug cozy measures approximately 3.5 inches tall by 4 inches wide when laying flat.
Designed to fit a standard reusable Starbucks coffee travel mug, this pumpkin spice cozy adds warmth and coziness to your morning brew. The sizing of your coffee cozy can easily be adjusted to fit your mug of choice (see the mug size adjustment detail in the pattern below for adjustment instructions).
This free pattern works up quickly using only the single crochet stitch for the coffee cozy base and no color changes. The crochet pumpkin applique is also fast to make with only two rounds plus the stem and leaf embellishments. I'd say this pattern is fairly beginner friendly! These pumpkin spice cozies make excellent fall crochet gift ideas!

Yarn:
For this free pattern, we're using medium (4) worsted weight yarn. It's the perfect size and durability for a crochet coffee cozy and most of us have worsted weight yarn on hand in a variety of colors (can't be just me, right?) Speaking of colors, I'm obsessed with this yarn color combination!!
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 20 / Ivory
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 154 / Burnt Pumpkin
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 260 / Light Sage
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Café Latte
These yarn choices could easily be substituted for different brands/colors as long as the oz / g is similar. I think the I Love This Yarn brand could be substituted with Red Heart Super Saver in colors Carrot, Tea Leaf, and Aran. These are my two favorite yarn brands due to the variety of colors available and the affordable price point.

Crochet Pumpkin Applique:
With burnt orange yarn,
Round 1: In a magic circle, chain 2, DC 9, pull tight, slip stitch into the first stitch to create a circle (9 stitches + slip stitch)
Round 2: 2 DC in the first 4 stitches, slip stitch, 2 DC in the next 4 stitches, slip stitch, chain 1, tie off with a long tail (17 stitches + slip stitch)
The stitch where we ended will be the top of the pumpkin.
Stem:
With café latte yarn, Chain 4
Slip stitch in the 3rd chain from your hook, slip stitch in the next, chain 1
Tie off with a long enough tail to attach to pumpkin.
Leaf:
With light sage yarn, chain 3
Slip stitch into the 2nd chain from your hook, single crochet in the next stitch, chain 1
Turn slightly and work down the other side of the chain.
Single crochet, slip stitch, chain 1
Tie off with a long enough tail to attach to the pumpkin.
Stem + Leaf Attachment:
You can use your hook or a tapestry needle for this step.
There are two tails on the stem. Pull each tail through either side of the top of the pumpkin and tie together on the back side to secure.
There are also two tails on the leaf. Pull one tail through the right side where the right side of the stem is attached. Without pulling the second tail through, tie both tails together on the back to secure.
Needless to say, you can attach these however you think looks best for your project!
Mug Size Adjustment
This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.
Coffee Cozy Base Pattern:
With ivory yarn, chain 35
Rows 1-12: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)
Tie off with a long tail and pull through the last chain 1 stitch to secure
Attach the Crochet Pumpkin Applique:
Using the long tails on your pumpkin splice applique and a tapestry needle, attach the pumpkin to the coffee cozy base.
Tie off on the back side and trim any excess yarn.
Cozy Assembly / Invisible Seam:
Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (pumpkin on the inside) and line up the rough edges.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.
Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.
Trim any excess yarn.
Turn right side out.
