The Crochet Heart Cozy is a beginner friendly, free crochet pattern that looks great in any colors! Quick and easy, this pattern makes a great crochet Valentine's Day gift idea.
Pattern Design + Construction:
This minimalist crochet design is the perfect cozy sweater for your mug! A beginner-friendly crochet pattern that whips up quickly, making an excellent gift idea for any season! I love the fall color combination of soft cream and burnt orange; however, this crochet heart applique cozy looks amazing in any holiday colors, especially for Valentine's Day!
This coffee sleeve consists of the base, which is worked in flat rows to create a rectangle. The rectangle is then seamed together using a tapestry needle. The adorable crochet heart applique is crocheted separately in the round and stitched onto the mug cozy with a tapestry needle. The finished crochet heart cozy measures approximately 4 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide when lying flat. A fun feature, this pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the mug size adjustment detail further below for instructions).

Yarn:
This coffee cozy pattern calls for Medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn. I love working with worsted weight yarn. It's versatile and available in most local craft stores. The price is also usually very affordable. Worsted weight is great for coffee sleeves since it can be washed and dried. Once again, the color possibilities for this Crochet Heart Cozy are endless!
I'm using the following yarn colors in this tutorial. Of course, you can substitute different brands as long as the ounces per gram are similar.
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 20 / Ivory
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 154 / Burnt Pumpkin

Mug Size Adjustment
This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 28 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 29 and each row will be 28 stitches.

slip stitch
chain 1
Tie off with a long tail and pull through that chain 1 to secure.
Pull the loose end of the magic circle tight, creating the heart.
Tie both tails together on the back to secure.
Attach the Crochet Heart Applique:
Using the long tails on your heart applique and a tapestry needle, attach the heart to the center of the coffee cozy base. I stitched around the outer edges to keep it secure.
Tie off on the back side and trim any excess yarn.
Cozy Assembly / Invisible Seam:
Fold the cup cozy with the wrong side facing out (heart on the inside) and line up the rough edges.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.
Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.
Trim any excess yarn.
Turn right side out.

Your foundation chain is 35, but you say SC into each stitch, CH 1 and turn. And it’s 34 stitches. Are you starting your SCin the second stitch from the hook? Does that make sense? lol I’m new to crocheting and want to make sure! TYSM❤️
