This crochet coffee cozy is a free crochet pattern here on the blog! The elegant yet simple crown design makes the perfect royal accessory for your mug!
Pattern Design + Construction:
This crochet crown coffee cozy is worked into flat rows using single and double crochet stitches to create a rectangle. The ridges or points of the crown are worked as the last row using single, half double, double crochet and slip stitches. The completed crochet coffee cozy is then folded and seamed up using a tapestry needle. The finished piece measures approximately 3" tall and 4.5" wide when lying flat.
Designed to fit a standard reusable Starbucks coffee travel mug, this crown adds personality and charm to your morning brew. Another fun feature of this crochet pattern is it can be adjusted to fit the mug of your choice (see the mug size adjustment detail in the pattern below for adjustment instructions).

Yarn:
This cozy pattern calls for medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn. Choose two or three yarn colors that make you feel like royalty. If you choose two colors, color number two will be used for both 2 and 3 in the pattern. For reference within the pattern:
Color 1 - begins at the bottom of the crown and repeats after the 'stripe' in the middle.
Color 2 - the 'stripe' in the middle
Color 3 - the accent tips on the ridges of the top of the crown
After making both types, 2 colors and then 3 colors, my personal preference is just 2 colors.
I'm using the following yarn colors for this crochet project:
Gold - I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, I lost the label so I'm not sure the color name (sorry!)
Pink - Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Pretty 'n Pink
Blue - I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 310/Peacock
Purple - Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Light Jasmine (this one is featured in the video tutorial)

Mug Size Adjustment
This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For this particular pattern, it will need to be in an increment of 4 + chain 1 so that Row 8 will work out evenly. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches. Row 8's sequence will be altered on how many times you repeat based on the increment of 4.

Coffee Cozy Base:
With color 1, chain 29
Rows 1-3: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (28 stitches)
on the last stitch of the 3rd row, switch to color 2
Row 4: DC in each stitch, chain 1 (28 stitches)
on the last stitch of the 4th row, switch back to color 1
Rows 5-7: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (28 stitches)
Row 8: SC, HDC, [DC, chain 2, DC in the same stitch], HDC* (35 stitches not counting chains)
on the last stitch of Row 8, switch back to color 2
Row 9: Slip stitch in each stitch across, except chain 2 at the top of each crest (35 stitches not counting chains)
Chain 1, tie off with a long tail.
Invisible Seam:
Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side out and line up the rough edges.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.
I like to tie off by double/triple knotting the tails together on the inside and trimming any excess yarn.
Turn right side out.
