Pattern Design + Construction

Garlands and coasters are some of my favorite holiday crochet projects to design. They're a quick and easy way to add a handmade, affordable and festive touch of decor to any space. These versatile crochet spiderwebs are adorable hung as bunting over a buffet or mantle. They're also the perfect size for cute little gift tag accessories!

Each Crochet Spiderweb Coaster is worked in flat rows of single crochet with a border added to the edges. The webbing is created using a simple slip stitch and a tapestry needle. The finished crochet spiderweb measures approximately 4.5 inches tall. You could easily create larger spiderwebs by increasing the size of your crochet hook and yarn weight.

Yarn:

For this free pattern, we'll be using medium (4) worsted weight yarn. I really enjoy using worsted weight yarn for most of my projects because of the versatility as well as the availability in most craft stores. Worsted weight yarn also tends to come in very affordable brands. You can easily substitute with other brands and colors as long as the ounces per gram are similar. I've used the following colors for this project:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color White

Crochet Spiderweb Coaster - Rows 1-15

Add a SC Border:

We've just finished the chain 1 of Row 15 and the point of the spiderweb is at the top.

  • Continue down the left side with a SC border

  • (chain 1 in the corner)

  • Continue to SC across the top.

  • (chain 1 in the corner)

  • Continue to SC down the other side.

  • When you've reached the triangle point again where the border began, slip stitch.

  • Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in.

Weave in all loose ends and trim any excess yarn.

Spiderweb Embellishments:

*This portion may be easier to understand by watching along with the video tutorial*

  • Using white yarn, create a slip knot on your hook and join at the bottom point of the triangle with a slip stitch.

  • Continue slip stitching up the center of the triangle until you reach the top center.

  • Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.

  • Repeat these steps starting again at the bottom center but going up the right and left sides.

  • Weave in on the back side and trim any excess yarn.

Next, trim a long section of white yarn and thread your tapestry needle. We are going to stitch wide letter 'V's in between the white columns to create the webbing.

Optional Spiders:

I found some small plastic spiders at my local dollar store. These would be a cute addition hot glued to the webs, but certainly not required.
