The Crochet Patriotic Garland is a quick and easy free crochet pattern that makes the perfect party décor for Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, or the 4th of July! Below you'll find the free pattern and video tutorial.
Pattern Design + Construction:
Garlands are one of my favorite crochet projects to design. They're a quick and easy way to add a handmade, affordable and festive touch of décor to any space. This Crochet Patriotic Garland is great for summer fun and the pattern is versatile! These are adorable hung as bunting over the buffet or mantle. They're also the perfect size for appliques, cute little gift tag accessories or even coasters!
This patriotic garland crochet pattern consists of the triangle bunting base which is crocheted into flat rows, the base border which is added to the finished triangle and the star which is crocheted separately and stitched onto the base using a tapestry needle. The finished bunting triangles measure approximately 4 inches wide by 4 inches tall. You could easily make larger triangles by using larger yarn and a larger crochet hook. The bunting triangles are strung together using jute.

Yarn:
For this free pattern, we'll be using medium (4) worsted weight yarn. I really enjoy using worsted weight yarn for most of my projects because of the versatility as well as the availability in most craft stores. Worsted weight yarn also tends to come in very affordable brands. You can easily substitute with other brands and colors as long as the ounces per gram are similar. I've used the following for this project:
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Hot Red
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Royal
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color White

Add a SC Border: Continue up the left side with a border of SC, chaining one in each of the bottom corners, until you reach the beginning stitch of your border. Slip stitch, chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in your ends. Trim any excess yarn.
Crochet Star:
With White Yarn,
Round 1: In a magic circle, chain 1, SC 10, pull the magic circle tight, slip stitch into the first SC of the round
Round 2:
We will repeat the following steps 5 times to make the five points of the star:
Chain 5, SC in the 3rd chain from your hook, HDC, DC (this makes 1 point)
To join the point to the base, skip 1 SC on the base of the round and slip stitch into the next stitch
Repeat
After the last stitch, chain 1 and tie off pulling through that chain 1 to secure.
Weave the ends out the back where you can make sure the center of your magic circle is pulled tight and tie the two ends together to keep it secure. Leave a long enough tail to attach the star to the bunting triangle base.
Assembly:
Using the long tail on the star and a tapestry needle, stitch the star onto the triangle base.
Using your tapestry needle and jute, string your finished triangles into a garland by running the jute through two points on the back top of the triangles.
