The Crochet Happy Mug Cozy is a free holiday pattern here on my blog!

Pattern Design + Construction:

The holiday season is here and this Crochet Happy Mug Cozy makes the perfect handmade gift idea! These adorable winter-themed coffee cozies pair perfectly with a Starbucks gift card and/or a cute mug. The patterns are designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug, but can easily be adjusted to fit your mug of choice (more details on pattern size adjustment down below). The sweet little face and snowflakes brighten any winter day!

Each crochet mug cozy consists of the base, which is crocheted in rows to create a flat rectangle. The cozy is seamed together using a tapestry needle. The mug handle embellishment as well as the face and snowflakes are added using a tapestry needle. The completed mug cozy measures approximately 4 inches tall by 4 inches wide when lying flat.

Yarn:

For this free pattern, we'll be using medium (4) worsted weight yarn. It's the perfect size and durability for a crochet coffee cozy and most of us have worsted weight yarn on hand in a variety of colors (don't we?...can't be just me). I enjoy using Red Heart Super Saver yarn because of its availability in most craft stores and the affordable price per skein. You could easily substitute for other brands and colors as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

For this cozy tutorial, I'm using the following colors:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Cherry Red

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color White

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Café Latte

I'm envisioning this cozy made with turquoise yarn and think that would turn out adorable as well!

Crochet Happy Mug Cozy - Free Pattern

Using beginner friendly stitches, this crochet project is quick and makes an excellent gift idea.

Mug Size Adjustment

This free pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.

Mug Cozy Base:

With red yarn, chain 35

Rows 1-13: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Row 14: SC in the BLO in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail, turn your work.

We've just turned our work so the previous row of red yarn BLO is now on the font side (side closest to you).

Join in the BLO of the same row with brown yarn (in the 'other' loop of Row 13 instead of creating a new row).

Row 14 (2nd color): SC in the BLO in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Tie off with a medium tail.

The Crochet Happy Mug Cozy is perfect for beginners!

Cozy Assembly / Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the mug cozy with the wrong side facing out (brown row facing the outside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.

  • Trim any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.

Mug Cozy Handle:

With red yarn, chain 16

Rows 1-2: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (15 stitches)

Tie off with a long tail.

Using the long tail, attach the handle to the mug.

(I put mine over the seam to make it less obvious)

Assembly of the crochet mug cozy.

Face and Snowflake Embellishment:

  • Attach the safety eyes. In order for the eyes to lie as flat as possible against the mug, I like to use a wire cutter to trim the excess posts on the back of the safety eyes.

  • Using a tapestry needle and black yarn, stitch on a little semicircle mouth slightly below and between the eyes. My semicircle is essentially a wide capital letter V that isn't too tight so it curves.

  • With white yarn, stitch some snowflakes around the sides and back of the mug (without covering the face).

  • Tie off on the inside and trim any excess yarn.
