The Crochet Mini Christmas Wreath Cozy is a free holiday pattern here on my blog! These mug cozies are great for beginners and make wonderful crochet gift ideas! Below you'll find the free pattern and video tutorial!
Pattern Design + Construction:
The minimalist design of the crochet Christmas Wreath Cozy brings the perfect amount of holiday cheer to your mug without overwhelming the eyes. My favorite feature of this pattern is the versatility of the mini Christmas wreath! Not only is it the perfect applique, but it also makes an adorable Christmas ornament or garland.
The mini wreath is crocheted using chain stitches, single crochet, half-double crochet and a few slip stitches. The wreath is attached to the cozy using a tapestry needle. The coffee cozy portion works up quickly using only the single crochet stitch, which makes it perfect for beginners and a really great crochet Christmas gift idea. The cozy is then seamed together using a tapestry needle.
The finished Crochet Mini Christmas Wreath Cozy measures approximately 3.5" tall by 4" wide when lying flat. This pattern is designed to fit a Grande 16 oz. Starbucks travel mug, but another great feature is the cozy base can be adjusted to fit your mug of choice (details further down).

Yarn:
This free pattern is created using medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn. I really enjoy designing projects using worsted weight yarn since it wears well while also being soft. It's the weight of yarn I consistently have on hand in a variety of colors. Below I've listed the specific brands and colors I've used, but you could easily substitute worsted weight as long as the ounces per gram are similar!
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Paddy Green
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Cherry Red
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Buff
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Aran
The darkest beige pictured is a skein I've had for a very long time that I've lost the label for :/

Mug Size Adjustment
This pattern is designed to fit a Grande 16 oz. Starbucks travel mug (but I can also fit it on a venti). However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.
Coffee Sleeve Base:
With the cozy yarn color of your choice, chain 35
Rows 1-12: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)
Tie off with a long tail.
Crochet Mini Christmas Wreath
Using the wreath color yarn of your choice,
Create a base circle:
Chain 10
Making sure the chain is not twisted, slip stitch into the first chain
Chain 2
Round 1: HDC 15 times around the chain circle [not directly into the chain stitches, but around the chain and beginning tail] (15 stitches)
Slip stitch into the first HDC, chain 1
Round 2: SC in each stitch around, slip stitch into the first SC (15 stitches + slip stitch)
Tie off with a long tail if you'll be using the wreath as an applique. If you'll be using it as a garland or an ornament, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the ends or to make an ornament hanger.
Trim the excess from the beginning tail.
Bow
Using a tapestry needle and the yarn color of your choice,
Leave a decent beginning tail and weave through every other stitch all the way around the wreath. This makes a sort of 'dash' look around the middle.
When you arrive back at the top, weave both ends to the front side.
Tie a cute little bow and trim the excess yarn.
Optional: I used a tiny bit of super glue and a toothpick to secure the center of the bow (behind the knot) and the tips to prevent unraveling.
Cozy Assembly - Invisible Seam:
Using a tapestry needle and the long wreath tail, attach the mini Christmas wreath to the cozy base.
Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (wreath on the inside) and line up the rough edges.
Using a tapestry needle and the long cozy tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.
Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.
Trim any excess yarn.
Turn right side out.
