The Crochet Kitty Cat Cuddler is a beginner friendly free crochet pattern. A kawaii cat amigurumi pattern, this cute kitten lovey is a great gift idea!
Pattern Design + Construction:
The inspiration for this Crochet Kitty Cat Cuddler design came from several requests I've received for a cat pattern! I really enjoy ragdoll style crochet projects, which means the front and back panels are crocheted separately then joined together and stuffed. The kitty arms, legs and tail are crocheted separately and attached using a tapestry needle.
This free pattern is beginner friendly and includes step by step progress photos for reference. These crochet cat lovies make excellent baby gift ideas, photo props or fun handmade stuffed animals for the cat lovers in your life. The finished crochet cat plushie measures approximately 8 inches tall by 4 inches wide with a 3.5 inch tail. You could easily adjust the sizing and weight of your crochet hook and yarn to create a larger or smaller kitten.

Yarn:
We'll be using medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn for this Crochet Kitty Cat Cuddler pattern. This is my favorite yarn weight to work with for crochet plushies and it has a great price point. It's versatile and wears well while also being soft and cozy which is perfect for a stuffed animal or lovey crochet pattern! You could easily substitute brands of worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.
For this tutorial, I used the following yarn colors:
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 20 / Ivory
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Light Peach
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black
Yarn Bee Yarn Soft & Sleek, Medium 4, 5 oz / 232 yd in the color Tobacco

Front & Back Panels:
With the body color yarn of your choice, Chain 17
Rows 1-20: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (16 stitches)
Beginning the ears now,
Row 21: SC in the first 6 stitches, chain 1 (6 stitches)
Row 22: DEC, SC in the next 4 stitches, chain 1 (5 stitches)
Row 23: DEC, SC in the next 3 stitches, chain 1 (4 stitches)
Row 24: DEC, SC in the next 2 stitches, chain 1 (3 stitches)
Row 25: DEC, SC in the next stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)
Row 26: DEC, chain 1 (1 stitch)
Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.
Join to the other side and repeat Rows 21-26.
Weave in the ends and trim any excess yarn.
Kitty Paws:
With the body color yarn of your choice,
Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)
Round 2: INC in each stitch (12 stitches)
Rounds 3-6: SC in each stitch (12 stitches)
Slip Stitch, tie off with a long tail.
Stuff the remainder of the tail from the magic circle inside.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail from the end, stitch the opening closed so the paw is flat. Set aside.
Front Panel Assembly:
Front Paws:
Attach the front two paws between Rows 9 & 10 using a tapestry needle and the long tails.
Stripes:
Using the yarn color of your choice,
Chain 3, tie off with a medium tail (2 needed)
Chain 4, tie off with a medium tail (1 needed)
Using a tapestry needle, attach the stripes to the panel between the ears. The longer one will be in the center.
Ears:
Using the yarn color of your choice and a tapestry needle, stitch some small ear accents onto the center of the ears. I like to make triangle shapes.
Eyes:
To create my faces, I like to make 'semicircles'. My semicircle is essentially a wide capital letter V that isn't too tight so it curves. Then I added a few eyelashes to the eyes.
I recommend tying off in between each eye so you can't see the yarn through the project.
Nose:
Using the yarn color of your choice, stitch on a cute little nose. Once again, I made a letter 'V' to create the nose. Almost a little heart shape.
Whiskers:
Using the yarn color of your choice, stitch on some little whiskers on either side of the nose. I added three whiskers on each side.
Mouth:
For the mouth, once again I made a wide capital letter 'V', then made a small vertical stitch in the center of the mouth to connect to the nose (I also think it's adorable without a mouth).
Back Panel Assembly:
Stripes:
Using the yarn color of your choice,
Chain 12, tie off with a medium tail (2 needed)
Chain 16, tie off with a medium tail (1 needed)
Using a tapestry needle, stitch the stripes onto the back. The largest will be in the center.
Assembly:
Line up the front and back panels of the crochet kitty cat cuddler (make sure the correct sides are facing out).
Using the body color yarn, we're going to join the front and back panels with a round of single crochet. I recommend starting in the bottom right corner (front facing you).
The only exception to the SC border will be a slip stitch at the inside corners of each ear.
Pause before closing entirely to add stuffing.
Tie off and weave in the ends.
Back Paws:
Using the long tails on the back feet and a tapestry needle, attach them to the bottom of the body.
Kitty Tail:
With the body color yarn of choice,
Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)
Rounds 2-14: SC in each stitch (6 stitches)
Slip stitch, tie off with a long tail.
Using a tapestry needle and the tail, attach the tail between the legs.
