Pattern Design + Construction
The smell of freshly baked cookies always puts me in a cozy holiday mood! So does this adorable Crochet Gingerbread Man! This free pattern is quick to whip up, which makes it a great holiday gift idea! The small size is perfect for a cuddler or an ornament; however, you can easily increase the size of your gingerbread man by using a heavier weight yarn and a larger crochet hook.
The basic stitches used make this pattern fun for beginners. This sweet gingerbread man is comprised of the front and back, which are crocheted in flat rows. We'll add the frosting and button embellishments using a tapestry needle. The front and back are then stuffed and joined together using a round of single crochet. The finished crochet gingerbread man measures approximately 5.5 inches tall by 4 inches wide.

Yarn:
We'll be using medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn for this crochet gingerbread man pattern. This is my favorite yarn weight to work with for crochet rag dolls and it has a great price point. It's versatile and wears well while also being soft and cozy which is perfect for a stuffed animal or cuddler pattern! You could easily substitute brands of worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.
For this tutorial, I used the following yarn:
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color White
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Café Latte
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Black
I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 230 Light Peach

Arms:
Join to the torso right below the neck indent on either side
Rows 1-2: SC 4, chain 1 (4 stitches)
Row 3: DEC, SC in the next 2 stitches, chain 1 (3 stitches)
Row 4: DEC, SC in the next stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)
Tie off with long enough tail to weave in the end.
Clean up the ends:
If you haven't already, at this point weave in all the loose ends and trim any excess yarn.
Frosting:
Using a tapestry needle and white yarn stitch some frosting zig-zags across the forehead, arms and legs. Tie off on the back side and trim any excess yarn.
Eyes:
I like to 'eyeball' where to place the eyes based on what I feel is cute (no pun intended). But, this is where mine landed:
If you count down from the top of the head, the safety eye placement is between the 6th & 7th rows, 3 stitches in from the outside, 6 stitches in between.
Mouth:
Using black yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch on a little semicircle mouth slightly below and between the eyes. My semicircle is essentially a wide capital letter V that isn't too tight so it curves.
Buttons:
With peach/pink yarn,
Round 1: in a magic circle, SC 4, pull tight (4 stitches)
Slip stitch into the first SC.
Tie off with a long enough tail to attach to the body.
Using a tapestry needle and the tails, stitch the buttons onto the torso.
Assembly:
Line up the front and back of the crochet gingerbread man (make sure the correct sides are facing out).
We're going to join the front and back of the body with a row of single crochet. I recommend starting at the top of the left arm (with front facing you).
The only exception to the single crochet border is at each 'corner' we're going to slip stitch. See below where the green dots represent the slip stitches.
Let's pause and the top of the right arm and add our stuffing. I added a light amount of stuffing to give the gingerbread man some dimension, but didn't over stuff. Once stuffed, continue single crocheting around the head until you reach the beginning of the border. Slip stitch, chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end. Once the ends are weaved in, trim any excess yarn.
