My Crochet Fox Cozy is a free pattern here on my blog!

Pattern Design + Construction:

I love designing cute animal patterns! This simple fox pattern works up quickly and makes the most adorable mug companion. I would classify this pattern as beginner friendly since it uses a handful of basic stitches. It can also be adjusted to fit your mug of choice (see the coffee sleeve base pattern detail below for adjustment instructions).

This Crochet Fox Cozy consists of the coffee sleeve base, which is crocheted in rows to create a flat rectangle. The ears are crocheted onto the base and the nose is stitched on using a tapestry needle. The coffee cozy is seamed together using a tapestry needle. The finished fox cozy measures approximately 4" tall by 4" wide when lying flat.

Yarn:

I chose medium (4) worsted weight yarn for my crochet Fox Cozy design. I enjoy working with worsted weight yarn for coffee sleeves since it is versatile and wears well. You could easily substitute for another worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

For this tutorial, I'm using the following yarn colors:

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color 260 / Burnt Pumpkin

  • Yarn Bee Yarn ID, Medium 4, 5 oz / 252 yd in the color Oats

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g. in the color Black

Crochet Fox Cozy - Free Pattern

This adorable mug companion makes an excellent crochet gift idea.

Mug Size Adjustment

This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.

*You'll want to consider the ears in your size adjustment and make sure they end up evenly spaced. This will depend on how many stitches you increase or decrease the base chain. The goal is to have the entirety of both ears visible on the edges of your mug when looking straight forward. So adjust the number of stitches in-between the ears accordingly to what looks best on your mug!*

Crochet Fox Cozy Base:

With cream yarn, chain 35

Rows 1-4: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

on the last stitch of the 4th row, switch to burnt orange leaving a long cream tail

Rows 5-12: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)

Turn and place a stitch marker in the chain 1 and pause with orange for now

Crochet Fox Ears:

Row 13

With the orange portion at the top, counting from right to left on the 12th row,

With cream yarn, join in the 11th stitch:

  • (in the 11th stitch: HDC, DC, TC, chain 2)

  • (in the 12th stitch: TC, DC, HDC)

  • Chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end

Skip the next 9 stitches.

With cream yarn, join in the 11th stitch:

  • (in the 11th stitch: HDC, DC, TC, chain 2)

  • (in the 12th stitch: TC, DC, HDC)

  • Chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end

Finishing Row 13:

Pick up where you left off with the orange yarn and begin single crocheting across the entire row and over the tops of the ears.

The exceptions to single crocheting on this row will be:

  • Chain 2 at the top of each ear to create the points.

  • Try to keep the cream tails on the ears pulled to the back of the coffee sleeve as you complete this row.

How to complete the ears on the crochet fox cozy.

At the end of the row, chain 1 and tie off with a long tail.

Secure, weave in and trim the cream tails from the ears on the back side of the coffee cozy.

The crochet fox cozy is designed to fit a standard reusable Starbucks mug.

Invisible Seam:

  • Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (better side of the ears on the inside) and line up the rough edges.

  • Using a tapestry needle and the long tails, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.

  • Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.

  • Trim any excess yarn.

  • Turn right side out.

*You can certainly add the nose and eyes before seaming up the cozy, but I prefer to add them afterward so I can see exactly how they will look once completed.

Crochet Fox Nose:

With black yarn,

Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 4, pull tight (4 stitches)

Slip stitch into the first SC and tie off with a long tail.

Using a yarn needle, stitch the nose onto the coffee cozy centered between the ears, where the cream and orange yarn rows meet.

Tie off on the inside and trim any excess yarn.

Crochet Fox Eyes:

Using a tapestry needle and black yarn, stitch two cute semicircle eyes above the nose. My semicircle is essentially a wide capital letter V that isn't too tight so it curves.

Tie off on the inside and trim any excess yarn.
