The Crochet Easter Chicks in three colors in a row.

Pattern Design + Construction:

Easter is the perfect time for fun, colorful crochet projects! These adorable little Crochet Easter Chicks can be used as fun crochet toys, egg-hunt companions or crochet photo props for little ones. This pattern is great for amigurumi beginners! It's quick and uses simple, basic stitches.

Each crocheted chick consists of the body base which is worked in the round, and the nose and wings which are crocheted separately and attached to the body using a tapestry needle. We'll also be adding a bit of stuffing and a cute fuzzy noggin. The finished Crochet Easter Chick measures approximately 3 inches tall by 3 inches wide. You could easily create a larger chick by increasing the size of your crochet hook and yarn weight.

Yarn:

We're using medium (4) worsted weight yarn for our crochet Easter chick design! I love working with worsted weight yarn in most of my projects since it's affordable, versatile, durable and available in most local craft stores. Worsted weight yarn is great for small amigurumi projects! You could easily substitute for another worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.

For this tutorial, I'm using the following yarn colors:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g. in the color Bright Yellow

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Burnt Pumpkin

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Ocean

  • I Love This Yarn, Medium 4, 7 oz / 199 g, in the color Light Peach

Red Heart Yarn used to make the Crochet Easter Chicks free crochet pattern.

Some other great yarn color options would be Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g. in the colors Minty and Flamingo.

Crochet Easter Chick - Free Crochet Pattern

The Crochet Easter Chicks in a row in yellow, pink and blue.

Beak Pattern:

With Burnt Orange Yarn, chain 4

Row 1: slip stitch, chain 1, HDC, chain 1, slip stitch, chain 1 (3 stitches + 3 chain 1's in between)

Tie off with a long enough tail to attach to the chick.

Crochet Chick Body Base:

With the base yarn color of your choice,

Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)

Round 2: INC in each stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3: INC, SC in the next stitch* (18 stitches)

Round 4: INC, SC in the next 2 stitches* (24 stitches)

Round 5: INC, SC in the next 3 stitches* (30 stitches)

Rounds 6-18: SC in each stitch (30 stitches)

Pause to add the face and embellishments.

Fuzz on Top of the Head:

Using a tapestry needle, pull the tail from the magic circle up through the inside and out the top of the magic circle. Trim to the desired length and unravel the yarn strands to create the fuzzy look.

Safety Eyes:

Attach the safety eyes between the 11th and 12th rows with 7 stitches in between.

Beak:

Using a tapestry needle, stitch on the beak one row below and in between the eyes. To create the 3-D look, only stitch down the top of the beak (which will be the 4 base chain stitches of the beak).

Stuffing:

At this point we will also add our stuffing. We want a nice plump crochet Easter chick without overstuffing. We don't want to see the stuffing bulging through the stitches. Remember, you can always add a bit more stuffing right before closing off.

Round19: DEC, SC in the next 3 stitches* (24 stitches)

Round 20: DEC, SC in the next 2 stitches* (18 stitches)

Round 21: DEC, SC in the next stitch* (12 stitches)

Round 22: DEC 6 times (6 stitches)

Chain 1, tie off with a medium tail.

Using a tapestry needle and the tail, stitch up the remaining opening and weave in the end.

Crochet Chick Wings:

With the base yarn color of your choice,

Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)

Round 2: INC, SC in the next stitch* (9 stitches)

Round 3: INC, SC in the next 2 stitches* (12 stitches)

Rounds 4-5: SC in each stitch (12 stitches)

Slip stitch, chain 1, tie off with a long tail.

Using a tapestry needle and the tail from the magic circle at the beginning of the wing, stitch the opening at the end of the wing closed (the wing will be flat).

Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, attach the wings to the sides of the chick. I like to place one stitch through the body, then one stitch through the wing and repeat.

Tie off, weave in any tails and trim any excess yarn.
