Pattern Design + Construction:
My favorite feature of this free crochet pattern is the versatility of the Christmas Holly. Not only is it the perfect applique for any project, but it also makes an adorable Christmas ornament, garland, or gift wrapping embellishment.
The Christmas Holly is crocheted using chain stitches, single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet, and a few slip stitches. The holly is attached to the cozy using a tapestry needle. The coffee cozy portion works up quickly using only the single crochet stitch, which makes it perfect for beginners and a really great crochet Christmas gift idea. The cozy is then seamed together using a tapestry needle; however, I've had some prefer to crochet the cozy in the round, which is also an option.
The finished Crochet Christmas Holly Cozy measures approximately 3.75" tall by 5" wide when lying flat. The holly applique measures approximately 2.75" long by 1.75" wide. This pattern is designed to fit a Grande 16 oz. Starbucks travel mug, but another great feature is the cozy base can be adjusted to fit your mug of choice (details further down).

Yarn:
This free pattern is created using medium Worsted Weight (4) Yarn. I really enjoy designing projects using worsted weight yarn since it wears well while also being soft. It's the weight of yarn I consistently have on hand in a variety of colors. Below I've listed the specific brands and colors I've used, but you could easily substitute worsted weight as long as the ounces per gram are similar!
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Paddy Green

Mug Size Adjustment
This pattern is designed to fit a Grande 16 oz. Starbucks travel mug (but I can also fit it on a venti). However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.
Coffee Sleeve Base:
With the cozy yarn color of your choice, chain 35
Rows 1-14: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)
Tie off with a long tail.
Crochet Christmas Holly Leaves:
With green yarn, chain 10
Brackets indicate within the same stitch [ ]
Row 1: Slip stitch, HDC, [DC, chain 2, slip stitch into the chain, DC], HDC, SC, HDC, [DC, chain 2, slip stitch into the chain, DC], HDC, slip stitch
To turn: Chain 2, slip stitch into the chain
Repeat Row 1 on the other side of the original chains.
Chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail.
Weave in the shorter tail.
Crochet Christmas Holly Berries:
With red yarn, in a magic circle
Round 1: SC 4, pull tight (4 stitches)
Round 2: SC in each stitch (4 stitches)
Slip stitch and tie off with a long enough tail to attach to the holly leaf.
Christmas Holly Assembly:
Using a tapestry needle and the red tail, attach the berry to the end of the leaf.
Tie off on the back side of the leaf and trim any excess red yarn.
Use the green tail to attach the holly to your project or add a loop for an ornament or garland. I would love to see what you use your holly for so please tag me on social media with your finished photos.
Cozy Assembly - Invisible Seam:
Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (holly on the inside) and line up the rough edges.
Using a tapestry needle and the long cozy tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.
Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.
Trim any excess yarn.
Turn right side out.
