These Crochet Bulky Heart Plush Pillows are quick and easy to make! The free crochet pattern and video tutorial are available here on my blog. These make adorable crochet Valentine's Day gifts or Valentine's home decor!
Pattern Design + Construction:
This pattern design was inspired by a special request from my lovely mother. She wanted some stuffed hearts to fill in her Valentine's Day home décor. Being that I'm a crochet-er with a relatively short attention span, I put my creativity cap on for a way to make several of these quickly. Enter, bulky yarn!
This free crochet pattern is great for beginners since it only uses a few basic stitches. Working with chunky yarn makes them super quick. Each crochet bulky heart consists of the front and back panels which are then stuffed and joined together using a round of single crochet. If you're a Valentine's gift basket type of person, these make excellent gift basket stuffers. They would also be cute little heart pillows for dolls or stuffed animals. This pattern is available in two size options. The completed large heart measures approximately 6 inches by 6 inches; the smaller version measures 4.5 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide.

Yarn:
We're using Yarn Bee True Colors Super Bulky Yarn for this tutorial. As you can see, this soft chunky yarn creates a gorgeous texture. This is a super bulky weight, category 6. You could easily substitute brands/colors as long as they are similar. Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick would work well; I'd also recommend Lion Brand Hometown.
I used the following colors for this tutorial:
Yarn Bee True Colors - Super Bulky - 5 oz./142g in the color White/100
Yarn Bee True Colors - Super Bulky - 5 oz./142g in the color Red/600
Yarn Bee True Colors - Super Bulky - 5 oz./142g in the color Rose/650

Front & Back Panels:
The front and back panels of our crochet bulky hearts will be worked in two sections:
bottom half
top half with curves
Beginning with the bottom:
With the yarn color of your choice, chain 14
Row 1: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (13 stitches)
Row 2: DEC, SC in the next 9 stitches, DEC, chain 1 (11 stitches)
Row 3: DEC, SC in the next 7 stitches, DEC, chain 1 (9 stitches)
Row 4: DEC, SC in the next 5 stitches, DEC, chain 1 (7 stitches)
Row 5: DEC, SC in the next 3 stitches, DEC, chain 1 (5 stitches)
Row 6: DEC, SC in the next stitch, DEC, chain 1 (3 stitches)
Row 7: DEC, SC in the next stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)
Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.
Top Curves
Turn the work right side up, point of the heart at the bottom.
We're going to be working in the base chain stitches of the bottom half.
Row 1: Join to the right side in the first stitch, SC in that stitch and the next 5 stitches, chain 1 (6 stitches)
Row 2: DEC, SC in the next 2 stitches, DEC, chain 1 (4 stitches)
Row 3: DEC twice, chain 1 (2 stitches)
Row 4: DEC, chain 1 (1 stitch)
Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.
Repeat Rows 1-4 on the other side.
Weave in the ends and trim any excess yarn.
Assembly:
Line up the front and back panels of the crochet bulky heart, one on top of the other.
We're going to join the front and back with a round of single crochet (*see exception below).
*The only exception to the SC border will be a slip stitch in the center of the two curves at the top where we left a stitch open.
With the heart facing you, I recommend starting at the bottom right side of the point.
Let's pause at the bottom left side and add our stuffing. We want our heart plush to be nice and plump without over-stuffing; we don't want to stretch the stitches. Once stuffed, continue single crocheting until you reach the beginning of the border.
Slip stitch into the first stitch of the border to complete, chain 1, tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.
Once everything is tied off and the ends are weaved in, trim any excess yarn.
Small Crochet Heart Option:
For size variety, we also have a free crochet pattern for the smaller heart pillows. This works well if you're mixing large and small hearts into a basket or a Valentine's home décor display. This pattern works just like the larger version, except the rows and stitch counts will vary slightly.
Front & Back Panels:
With the heart color yarn of your choice, Chain 10
Row 1: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (9 stitches)
Row 2: DEC, SC in the next 5 stitches, DEC, chain 1 (7 stitches)
Row 3: DEC, SC in the next 3 stitches, DEC, chain 1 (5 stitches)
Row 4: DEC, SC in the next stitch, DEC, chain 1 (3 stitches)
Row 5: DEC, SC in the next stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)
Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.
Turn the work right side up, point at the bottom.
We're going to be working in the base chain stitches of the bottom half.
Row 1: Join to the right side in the first stitch, SC in that stitch and the next 3 stitches, chain 1 (4 stitches)
Row 2: DEC twice, chain 1 (2 stitches)
Row 3: DEC, chain 1 (1 stitch)
Tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.
Repeat Rows 1-3 on the other side.
For the remaining steps, follow the instructions for the larger heart pillow.
