My Crochet Beginner Baby Blanket is a free pattern designed for beginners! This quick and easy project makes the perfect handmade baby shower gift or nursery décor. Below you'll find the free pattern and video tutorial!
Pattern Design + Construction:
My inspiration for this pattern design was born from my desire to make adorable handmade baby shower gifts for loved ones, but also having a short attention span with lengthy crochet projects. I wanted to create a baby blanket that was quick and easy with no color changes, while also being functional and adorable (I'll have my cake and eat it too)!
Using soft and bulky yarn, this crochet beginner baby blanket is worked in flat rows to create a rectangle. The finished blanket measures approximately 30 x 32 inches, a multi-use blanket size if you will. One could easily create a larger or smaller blanket by increasing the base chain stitches and adding more/less yarn.
Beginner Friendly
The bulk of this blanket is crocheted using the back loop only half double crochet. This simple and repetitive stitch makes this pattern perfect for crochet beginners. Using multi-colored yarn eliminates the need for color changes, bringing the focus to simply continuous crochet. Using bulky yarn is the key to a quick work up of this project. I made an entire blanket in the car while Keith drove us to the beach!

The Yarn:
I chose Bernat Blanket yarn for my baby blankets because of the availability and color variety at most craft stores. I really like this yarn because it's machine washable and dryable, which is perfect for little ones. Bernat offers the Blanket Twist version with the color strands intertwined and also their traditional Baby Blanket version with gradually changing colors. Either of these work up beautifully without having to change colors throughout.
This pattern requires approximately two 10.5oz / 300g, 220 yds skeins. This is a super bulky weight yarn (6). (Note that tension and style affect how much yarn is used and can vary by person.)
I've used both colors:
Making Waves
Salmon Sand Varg
