Pattern Design + Construction:
I absolutely love to design crochet patterns for adorable little animals so why not a little alien that fits nicely on your favorite mug?! This pattern is quick and makes a great gift idea for any outer space fans in your life! I would classify this pattern as beginner level since the most challenging stitch involved is a magic circle.
This Crochet Baby Alien Cozy consists of the coffee sleeve base, head, ears and arms. The pieces are assembled using a tapestry needle. The completed coffee cozy measures approximately 4" tall and 4.5" wide when lying flat. This pattern can be adjusted to fit the width of your mug of choice (see the mug size adjustment detail in the pattern below for adjustment instructions).

Yarn:
I chose medium (4) worsted weight yarn for my crochet Baby Alien Cozy design. I enjoy working with worsted weight yarn for coffee sleeves since it is versatile and wears well. You could easily substitute for another worsted weight yarn as long as the ounces per gram are similar.
For this tutorial, I'm using the following yarn:
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g. in the color Café Latte
Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g. in the color Frosty Green
Yarn Bee Yarn ID, Medium 4, 5 oz / 252 yd in the color Oats
For the light beige/cream, I think Red Heart Super Saver in the color Buff would be a good substitute.

Baby Alien Cozy - Free Crochet Pattern
Mug Size Adjustment
This pattern is designed to fit a standard Starbucks reusable mug. However, you can easily adjust your chain stitch amount on the base of the coffee cozy pattern to fit the mug of your choice! You'll chain the amount that fits perfectly around your mug + 1 chain stitch. For instance, if 32 stitches fit perfectly around your mug you will chain 33 and each row will be 32 stitches.
Coffee Sleeve Base:
With brown yarn, chain 35
Rows 1-10: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)
On the last stitch of the 10th row, switch to cream leaving a long brown tail.
Rows 11-12: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (34 stitches)
Tie off with a long cream tail, pulling through the chain stitch to secure.
Set aside.
Head:
With green yarn,
Round 1: In a magic circle, SC 6, pull tight (6 stitches)
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch (12 stitches)
Round 3: 2 SC in the first, SC in the next* (18 stitches)
Round 4: 2 SC in the first, SC in the next 2 stitches* (24 stitches)
Round 5: 2 SC in the first, SC in the next 3 stitches* (30 stitches)
Slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 1
Tie off with a long tail, pulling through the chain stitch to secure.
Set Aside.
Ears:
With green yarn, chain 8 (leaving a long tail at the beginning).
Row 1: SC in each stitch, chain 1 (7 stitches)
Row 2: DEC, SC in the next 5 stitches, chain 1 (6 stitches)
Row 3: DEC, SC in the next 4 stitches, chain 1 (5 stitches)
Row 4: DEC, SC in the next 3 stitches, chain 1 (4 stitches)
Row 5: DEC, SC in the next 2 stitches, chain 1 (3 stitches)
Row 6: DEC, SC in the next stitch, chain 1 (2 stitches)
Row 7: DEC, chain 1 (1 stitch)
Continue up the left side with a row of slip stitches around the entire ear (chaining 1 in each corner).
When you arrive back at the tip of the ear, chain 1.
Tie off pulling through that chain stitch to secure and weave in the loose end.
Ear Attachment:
Using the long tail from the beginning of the ear and your tapestry needle, stitch the two corners of the bottom of the ear together. They 'roll' inward to create the curve of the ears. Then attach to either side of the head. Tie off and trim any excess yarn. Set aside.
Arms (Make 2):
With green yarn,
Round 1: In a magic circle, chain 1, SC 4, pull tight (4 stitches)
Round 2: SC in each stitch around (4 stitches)
on the last stitch of the 2nd round, switch to brown
Round 3: SC in each stitch around (4 stitches)
Slip stitch, chain 1
Tie off with a long tail, pulling through the chain to secure.
Baby Alien Cozy Assembly:
You can choose any order of assembly that you'd prefer! This is just what worked best for me.
Using the long tail from the base of the head, stitch the bottom half of the head onto the coffee sleeve base. The top half of the head sits above the top of the coffee sleeve base.
Now, attach the safety eyes through the head and the back of the coffee sleeve base, securing the backs.
Using the long tails and your tapestry needle, attach the arms (I actually created the seam below before attaching the arms so I could see where they would sit on the mug).
Invisible Seam:
Fold the coffee cozy with the wrong side facing out (face on the inside) and line up the rough edges.
Using a tapestry needle and the long tail, stitch the rough ends together. You can use a whip stitch, or a simple back and forth stitch. Pay close attention to the top and bottom of the join to ensure it won't pull apart when stretched over the mug.
Tie off toward the center and weave in the loose ends.
Trim any excess yarn.
Turn right side out.
